Description
This publication is already the tenth volume of a long-term project by the Museum of the Capital City of Prague about Prague's districts. As the subtitle suggests, it deals with an exceptionally diverse area with a convoluted history. In the cadastre of Hlubočepy, we find entirely different urban units – 'own' Hlubočepy with Zlíchov, once known for its industrial enterprises, the village of Klukovice, the famous villa district of Barrandov with its equally famous film studios, and the socialist housing estate that is gradually expanding into a new, modern district. The restaurant complex of Barrandov Terraces used to be a meeting place for film stars and ordinary citizens, and numerous sports events took place in the adjacent swimming pool. This whole area is framed by an extraordinarily picturesque natural setting of limestone cliffs, which became – along with the railway – the main prerequisite for the local industrial development in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Adjacent to Hlubočepy is the romantic Prokop Valley, once known for its pilgrimages to the cave and the church of St. Prokop, where the writer Jaroslav Foglar experienced his first scouting adventures. And it was right here in Hlubočepy that the geologist Joachim Barrande stepped towards world fame.
