Description
Prague, as you don't know it. Poor Prague. Do you know where you would find Fišpanka, the White Castle, or Arizona? What services did the Kandelábr hotel provide, who was the father of the poor, and what was life like in emergency colonies? The city is not only made up of royal residences, noble palaces, grand bourgeois houses, and majestic ecclesiastical architecture. The expression of the city and its atmosphere are equally contributed to by its poor. Poverty has a significant ethical and aesthetic dimension and far-reaching societal impacts. The publication Poor Prague offers a look at poverty in the city in the 19th and especially the first half of the 20th century from several perspectives. Historical visual materials, primarily photographs and prints, illustrate the survival strategies of the impoverished classes, capture places associated with poverty that no longer exist, and introduce the institutions of poor and social care as they formed since the Josephinian era. An inserted English translation of the texts.
