Description
This autobiographical novel follows Memesa, a young Roma girl in her native Finland who closely observes the world around her and dislikes much of what she sees. The women in her community serve men, have no rights and accept frequent beatings as a normal part of life. Memesa is still a child, but she grows up quickly and must decide whether to put on the heavy velvet skirt resembling a black butterfly and accept the role expected of her, closing the path to education, freedom and personal happiness, or leave behind everything she has known. This is the first volume of an autobiographical trilogy by the internationally renowned artist Kiba Lumberg, whose radical views on both her Roma community and the art establishment have been a source of considerable controversy.
