Description
Anuša, Marina, Eva, and Nataša, whose initials form the Romani word AMEN – WE, are friends for life and death. Except for the youngest, Nataša, they are finishing elementary school and deciding what to do next. They still meet daily at the Bíla halda in Rokycany, where they dream of careers as singers or rides in sports cars, but adulthood is already beckoning around the corner. They experience first loves, and their friendship is often put to the test. They grapple with reality, whether it be a factory, vocational school, East Germany, or a Slovak settlement. Yet they never lose their sense of humor and faith in one another. Ilona Ferková's proletarian girls' novel, aimed at older youth, is exceptional for its setting in the Romani working class and its placement in the dance-filled sixties of socialist Czechoslovakia. It takes place among young people who had to start working right after elementary school and, alongside the coarse language of the streets, naturally master the romantic language of love. Above all, it is a story of great girl friendship.
