Description
The novel tells the story of Kōchan, a boy who from early childhood indulges in bizarre dreams of heroes destined for violent death. His weak body awakens in him an admiration for masculine strength and a powerful attraction to its representatives. Trying to adapt to the majority, he attempts to form a relationship with a girl named Sonoko. The mask of normality that Kōchan puts on helps him integrate into a society he sees as based on a collective masquerade in which people conceal their true feelings and desires. With strong autobiographical elements, the novel reflects Yukio Mishima’s lifelong admiration for samurai values and his own concept of ideal beauty, which ultimately proved fatal to him.
