Paths are lost God knows where, every moment some unknown sound echoes from somewhere, something ominously cracks and rustles all the time, and when dusk falls, the air is saturated with evening dew and the forest is cloaked in a dark, blue-green shadow. Vever closes one of his many learned books that he had just been reading, leaves his dwelling between two old oaks, and carefully descends the ladder to try to convince someone in the Black Glade that he is not an ordinary squirrel.
