Description
This Czech-language book brings together memories of Second World War witnesses, extracts from chronicles and written recollections that supplement and revise Čvančara’s diaries. Not everything presented as truthful testimony about the events of 1945 under the totalitarian regime was true, and as the last witnesses leave us, it is important to preserve accounts of these historical upheavals as people experienced them in childhood. The war reached places that receive little attention because we do not know about them and fail to realise that we walk across sites that shaped our history. A child of war perceived death and cruelty in a distinctive way, saw what adults did not, went where others were afraid to go and heard what could not be discussed. Through these accounts, the war appears in another dimension and the chroniclers’ records can be corrected. The witnesses are disappearing too quickly for us to return to them and continue our own writing, making human stories and the need to listen to the messages passed down to us all the more important.
