In the autumn of 1945, a tall young girl appeared among a group of aviation enthusiasts in Točná, who was all fired up about flying. She didn't care that gliding was then a male-dominated sport, and she completely fell in love with rising currents. Věra Šlechtová, later Špačková, became a professional instructor at an aviation training center in Vrchlabí at the age of 22 and tied her entire life to the local flying school. She recorded twelve gliding records and became a legend of post-war aviation. In her memoir, she intertwines her life stories with those of aviation and offers a lightly informal chronicle of an era of sports flying, along with fond memories of those who were its actors. One event stood out from the peaceful childhood that little Věra experienced in Bratislava. "In 1937, when I was nine, we went on a family trip to an air day in Vajnory. There I became a junior member of the Masaryk Aviation League. I don't know where it came from, maybe something in my genes, it fully manifested later.
