The Illuminati or illumination, illuminism (sometimes spelled with -ll- or translated into Czech as enlightenment, from the Latin illuminatio – enlightenment) is a term for many groups, both contemporary and historical, real and fictional. Most commonly, it refers to the Bavarian Illuminati, an enlightened secret society. The word 'Illuminati' comes from the Latin word for 'enlightenment', and it is no wonder that this name has been appropriated by several historical groups that had little in common. This often happened because the groups possessed gnostic texts or other secret information that was not commonly accessible. The movement of free thinkers, who were the most radical branch of the Enlightenment and whose followers were referred to as Illuminati (even though they called themselves 'The Worthy of Perfection'), was founded on May 1, 1776, at the University of Ingolstadt. The symbol of the society became the owl of the Roman goddess of wisdom, Minerva. Adam Weishaupt was a philosopher and church lawyer. He was meant to be a counterbalance to the dominance of the local Jesuits and an intellectual alternative to the Masonic and Rosicrucian lodges.
