John Byrne Cooke assisted Janis Joplin as a road manager and filmmaker – and he recorded everything for future generations. He now tells the previously unknown story of the time he spent with the young woman from Port Arthur who became the first female rock and roll superstar – but left too soon. As a member of D. A. Pennebaker's film crew, he witnessed the fascinating breakthrough performances of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967. Less than six months later, he flew to San Francisco and took on the role of road manager for Janis Joplin and her band Big Brother and the Holding Company. He did this job even as musicians and support staff came and went with Janis Joplin, remaining in the background of all the events while the woman known as Pearl stormed the world. Cooke was there when Janis, with a heavy heart, decided to leave Big Brother and form a new band.
