Pennebaker's film crew, he witnessed the fascinating breakthrough performances of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967. Less than six months later, he flew to San Francisco and took on the role of road manager for Janis Joplin and her band Big Brother and the Holding Company. He did this job even as musicians and support staff came and went with Janis Joplin, remaining in the background of all the events while the woman known as Pearl stormed the world. Cooke was there when Janis, with a heavy heart, decided to leave Big Brother and form a new band. He accompanied her and the Kozmic Blues Band on their European tour in the spring of 1969, at the Woodstock festival, and also when she and her next band, Full Tilt Boogie, embarked on the famous Festival Express tour...
