In the collection of diary entries A Tie Your Shoelaces, Roman Szpuk turns to the Šumava landscape and nature, observing the happenings around him and capturing small everyday stories. Just like in his previous book, Hoarse Chants (Stehlík, 2013), which was nominated for the Josef Škvorecký Award, he fully reveals an extraordinary inner view of the world here. With rich language, he develops classic literary techniques such as diary entries and prose poems. The wanderer Szpuk does not hide his romantic, tormented soul and sensitive poet's nature. Through artistic, musical, theological, and meteorological terms, he reflects on powerful moments in the wild nature, where he ventures out in any weather and season. He focuses on the quieter and deeper aspects of human existence. The poet (narrator) is most often accompanied throughout the book by a child (Dominik) and a madman (Zdeněk). The story mainly takes place in Vimperk and its surroundings, at the Churáňov meteorological station, and in Teplice.
