Description

It's October 1946. The painful echoes of war mingle with a joyful present, but also with dark tones hinting at the future. The enemy is suddenly unclear. And when he is finally recognized, his steps are completely unpredictable. On one side stands Kilián Nowotný, the famous smuggler, the King of Šumava. On the other, Staff Captain Ladislav Kilián, commander of the trophy unit of the Ministry of the Interior. Both know about the valuable stash that the displaced Germans hid in a house beneath the castle in Vimperk. And between them is Constable Jan Firman, the son of a famous financier, who is desperately trying to uncover what lies hidden in the town from which all valuables were taken by American troops. The Vimperk native Martin Sichinger confirms in this novel that his trump card is his love for the place he knows. The Spirits of Šumava is a requiem for the time when smugglers crossed the borders and glass masters worked in the forges. At the same time, it is a dramatic story that shows how difficult post-war settlement was in the predominantly German borderlands.
