Description
The domain of literary historian and editor Jaroslava Janáčková is 19th-century Czech literature. Following a series of author monographs or thematically conceived collections of studies, the present book is the first selection of her shorter essays published in hard-to-access journals or anthologies, supplemented by contributions that have not yet been published. The author selected the essays from the mature period of her scholarly work, spanning from the late 1960s to the present. She considered it important that the individual examples pointed to selected methodological issues that she has long addressed in her work as a literary historian (criticism, the reader, the persistence of genre, the study of the reception of literary works, their transnational inspirations, popular literature, conflicting situations in literary communication, correspondence). However, her main goal was for the selected studies to present literature – especially from the age before last – as an open source of values, questions, and meaning, visited by the greatest contemporary poets and prose writers, such as Jaroslav Seifert, Vladimír Holan, Jan Skácel, or Ladislav Fuks, and through them, enduring in our present.
