Description
A new language guide for traveling across the African continent. From the diverse mix of languages, we have selected the five most widely spoken – Arabic, Swahili, Afrikaans, Amharic, and Hausa. Each language represents a different culture, a different sound, often even a different script. Arabic is a Semitic-Hamitic language and is the most widely used in Africa. We chose Egyptian Arabic not only because Egypt is a long-popular year-round holiday destination, but also because this dialect is understood in other countries of North Africa. Afrikaans is a West Germanic language and is predominant at the southern tip of the continent. Paradoxically, it may be the closest of all languages to us, as it originated from the language of Dutch settlers. Swahili is a Bantu language with genuine African roots. It is spoken by around 80 million people across East Africa. The Chadian language Hausa is the Esperanto of West Africa, spoken not only in Niger and Nigeria but also partially in other countries around the Gulf of Guinea. The most exotic of the five is Amharic, a Semitic language from the cradle of humanity, Ethiopia, known for its decorative script.
