Description
American Spanish is a collection of dynamically evolving and mutually influencing living languages and dialects. Most native Spanish speakers, the second most widely spoken language in the world, come from America. Our dictionary maps the vocabulary in 19 countries of South and Central America and the Caribbean. It includes not only the latest slang and colloquial expressions but also the most frequently used words of everyday vocabulary that distinguish American Spanish from European Spanish. The dictionary focuses on contemporary spoken language in South and Central America. However, the task of mapping the languages of nearly two dozen countries in such a limited space is extremely complex; each of these countries deserves a separate publication. The largest sections are occupied by Argentine, Chilean, Colombian, Mexican, Peruvian, and Venezuelan Spanish. This is not only due to the number of speakers. All these countries are literally a paradise for slang lovers, with each region in this vast territory being linguistically specific. However, the dialects of smaller Spanish-speaking countries are not overlooked either. Distinctive slangs of cities (like lunfardo in Argentine Buenos Aires) or regions (like dialecto paisa in Colombian Antioquia) also play a significant role. We have also tried to map those.
