Description
EVIL DREAMS is a collection of essays, interviews, and short stories written by young authors aged 11 to 22. In this extraordinary anthology, young writers have reconstructed the narratives of refugees who arrived in Australia at various times. From hundreds of stories gathered in a school competition organized by Australia Against Racism Inc. and writer Eva Sallis, the most captivating texts were selected to form this unique book. The stories and essays from many corners of the world depict the struggles of refugees, unimaginable injustices, and feelings of alienation in a new country. Some narratives were born from interviews with refugees who were in Australian detention centers at the time the book was created. The young authors describe stories that are shocking, heartbreaking, sad, and even joyful. The narratives are spiced with straightforward childlike imagination, humor, and compassion, or even surprise at how the lives of the writers can differ so unimaginably from the experiences of their refugee peers. An interesting thread connecting all the stories is the theme of friendship. Friendship that is lost, broken, or rediscovered.
