It was the best army we had in modern history. Czechoslovak legionnaires in Russia. Three infantry divisions, one cavalry brigade, soldiers lost in a country torn apart by civil war. They were left with only one option to return home – to seize the Trans-Siberian Railway, the longest railway in the world, with weapons in hand, retreat along it to the Far East, and wait for ships sailing to Europe. They managed it despite the constant attacks from the Reds and the fighting raging almost everywhere. This was between 1918 and 1920. And now, experienced reporter Jan Rychetský set out to trace the footsteps of the legions. He traveled from Ukrainian Zborov, the site of the first of the great legionnaire victories, through Bachmač, the Volga, and Yekaterinburg to Asia, all the way to Lake Baikal, where our men successfully fought a 'naval' battle. And then further through Khabarovsk to the destination in Vladivostok. He traveled by train, hitchhiked, took buses, marched on foot, and occasionally slept in a tent.
