Another in our series of Taiwanese prose. The novel Love and Revolution (1994) is the most famous work by author Ping Lu, in which she alternates between the perspectives of both main characters, describing the life stories of Madam Sung Ching-ling and Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the Republic of China, while also reconstructing the historical memories of China and Taiwan in the first half of the twentieth century. Upon its release in Taiwan, the novel sparked a wave of controversy, and in the People's Republic of China, where the story takes place, its publication is still banned, as the author dismantles the cult of personality that has been built around these two significant figures in Chinese history.
