Description
The book introduces the Czech reader to Montale's remarkable and significant body of essayistic and critical work, which the author himself referred to as his 'secondary profession' (Il secondo mestiere). This collection of Montale's critical essays is a broad selection of texts created over half a century, in which Italian, French, and English poetry and prose are analyzed with exceptional insight. Montale judges literary works from a very coherent aesthetic position, and his essays are a true geyser of precise, detailed observations. Although he remains one of the great representatives of European modernism in his critical stances, he is also a penetrating judge of the dead ends of avant-garde experiments. The translator and editor of the book, Jiří Pelán, supplemented the book with a postscript and a number of editorial notes and explanations.
