Description

Ondřej Hladík's book provides a detailed look at crime during the Rudolfine era. The author primarily draws from the so-called books of conscience, which were created as part of judicial proceedings in the early modern period, specifically in the New Town of Prague between 1585 and 1593. In these books, the sworn scribe recorded witness testimonies related to disputes, such as delicts against personal rights, which included adultery and 'dishonor,' delicts against health and life, which encompassed murders, bar brawls, or homicides. The study also captures a unique case of witchcraft, categorized among delicts against the official ideology. Property disputes were not overlooked either - perhaps the most problematic of these was the dispute over the inheritance of the rector of Charles University, Petr Codicilla from Tulechov. Each case is supplemented with citations of testimonies, which not only illustrate the complicated work of the councilors sitting in court but also bring closer often unexpected details of life in the city at the end of the 16th century.
