Description
The publication presents a selection of studies by the leading Czech historian of science Zdeněk Horský (1929-1988), which are the result of his many years of research focused on the formation of modern European science and the development of cosmology and astronomy in the 15th to 17th centuries. The collection thematically progresses from the relationships between philosophy and natural sciences and the cosmology of Renaissance Platonism, through the work of Nicolaus Copernicus, his reception in the Czech environment, the scientific culture of the Czech Renaissance, to the science of the 17th century. It concludes with Horský's methodological and generalizing reflections on the development of sciences and their historiography. The collection includes both previously published texts and those that have not yet been published and are inaccessible to a wider readership. It therefore represents not only a document of Horský's well-known work but also makes accessible a new, monographically organized whole of his studies, which remain relevant and extraordinarily valuable not only for philosophy and the history of science but also for cultural history in general or the history of ideas. The publication is accompanied by an introductory study on the author's work, influence, and scholarly contributions.
