Description
The collective monograph "On the Protectorate in Socio-Cultural Contexts" opens up some new questions regarding the relationship between culture and society, which arose in the extraordinary conditions of Nazi occupation, thanks to its transdisciplinary approach. The individual studies focus primarily on three thematic areas: the first is "divided art," which refers to the very nature of the existence of Czech culture at the time (ranging from collaboration to illegal activity); the second examines the tension between "the pathos of resistance and the alibism of self-sacrifice," reflecting a certain duality in the contemporary reception of culture; the third theme explores the "ideological filters of examination" of the protectorate, reflecting patterns of exclusion, stigmatization, or tabooization according to the given ideological orientation. All chapters, covering the fields of media history, cinematography, visual arts, architecture, historiography, and literary history, share a common focus on the consequences of the protectorate reality for the cultural and social life of the time and its continuation in the subsequent periods, as well as for the efforts to understand and interpret it.
