Description
The publication Julius Zeyer and His Relationship with French Culture brings many new insights, particularly in the area of the author's inspiration from French literature, but also from his life. We have narrowed the broad topic down to several areas, namely Zeyer's travels to France, contacts with local artists, reading of French literature, and the French genetic sources of his works. In the first chapter, we focus on Zeyer's stay in Paris in 1889-1890, including trips to Brittany and Picardy. We base our findings on his correspondence and on literature about Zdenka Braunerová, who facilitated most of Zeyer's Parisian contacts. We also address the French inspirational sources of Zeyer's work. A key question for us is what type and degree of influence from French sources is manifested in his works. The second chapter, divided into three periods, provides a broad overview of Zeyer's texts influenced by French literature. In the third chapter, we delve deeper and analyze three works (The Novel of the Faithful Friendship of Amis and Amil, Kristina the Miraculous, and The Marian Garden) in detail.
