Description
Isaac of Nineveh, one of the greatest Christian mystics of all time, lived in the 7th century as a monk-hermit in the region of Mesopotamia (the territory of present-day Iraq and Iran). The presented book analyzes Isaac's ascetic and mystical teachings – particularly the states of abandonment by God, temptation, humility, tears of repentance, prayer, and mystical enlightenment, spiritual awe, and 'intoxication' by God; space is also devoted to his understanding of the relationship between faith and knowledge, the interpretation of the life of the age to come, eschatological hope, and especially the central theme of his fascinating theological concept of God-Love, which is 'the sole cause of the creation of the world.' The book by Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev, a leading Orthodox theologian, among other things, a Doctor of Philosophy from Oxford University and L'Institut de Théologie Orthodoxe Saint-Serge in Paris, is the first monograph on Isaac of Nineveh in contemporary world scholarship and has been translated into several European languages.
