Description

The charred papyrus from the end of the 4th century BC, burned during a funeral ceremony in the northern Greek village of Derveni, drew deserved attention immediately after its discovery in 1962. It is one of the oldest Greek papyri ever found and is likely the oldest European book that has physically survived to this day. Its content is also more than remarkable - it is a pre-Socratic commentary on an Orphic poem, in which the influence of Anaxagoras or his students, as well as Heraclitus, is clearly evident. Are we dealing with a 'secret book of the ancient Orphics,' or with a philosophical work that allegorically interprets a sacred poem? Does the papyrus conceal previously unknown pre-Socratic fragments? And who is actually the author of this mysterious and intricate text? Thanks to the recently published official edition of this important find, we can now seriously pose these and other questions.
