Description
Even during 1943, the Spitfire Mk.IX was the main fighter type designated by Fighter Command to achieve air superiority. After the establishment of the 2nd TAF and the introduction of more powerful Spitfires Mk.XIV and Tempests Mk.V, the role of these aircraft changed in the spring of 1944. Now, the "nines" also took on fighter-bomber missions. They proved their effectiveness in this role during the campaign against the "Noballs" (the launch bases of German retaliatory weapons). They continued to represent a quality type, but especially in terms of speed, they lagged slightly behind the absolute top fighters. However, they still enjoyed great favor among their pilots due to the very good balance of performance and flying characteristics. This was also true for Czechoslovak pilots, as in January and February 1944, the 310th, 312th, and 313th squadrons finally bid farewell to the inadequate Spitfires Mk.V and transitioned to the Mk.IX.
