Description
Among the most important aircraft that Czechoslovak pilots flew during the difficult years of World War II is undoubtedly the Spitfire Mk.V. This version was created as an emergency solution to the British Fighter Command's need for more powerful aircraft than the existing Spitfires Mk.I and Mk.II. It proved itself and was subsequently produced in larger numbers than other variants of the Spitfire. Through serial production and conversions of older variants, over 6,600 examples were created. As a result, the originally 'transitional' Mk.V held a position as a basic component of the Fighter Command's arsenal in the British Isles for quite a long time.
