The presented collection of studies maps over fifty years of Vladimír Justl's research interest in the poet's work. The core of the selection consists of texts from the 1960s, published primarily in various periodicals or as forewords in collections of the poet's work, in which Vladimír Justl, as the first after 1948, provides an informed commentary on the entirety of Holan's work to date and also a more comprehensive view of the transformation of Holan's poetics from his debut through the strict metrical construction of the poet's verses in the 1930s to the gradual abandonment of fixed meter and the prosaization of verse. The whole is concluded by the author's studies from the post-revolutionary period, which, with their broadly synthesizing scope, occupy a prominent place in the existing Holan research. Literary historian, theater scholar, and editor Vladimír Justl (1928–2010) is one of the leading experts on the life and work of Vladimír Holan. As his court editor, he played a significant role in the powerful resurgence of this poet into Czech literature, as well as into broader cultural awareness, during the 1960s. He gradually advocated for the publication of his poetry collections and larger lyrical-epic works from the 1940s and 1950s, which could not be published after 1948, as well as the poet's works from the 1960s.
