Literary historian, university educator, critic, and editor Jiří Brabec (1929) is undoubtedly a prominent authority in the field; however, his texts scattered across magazines and collections have not yet been published in book form. The reason may lie in the author's workload, pedagogical activities, and editorial work (especially the preparation of the Works of T. G. Masaryk and the Works of Jaroslav Seifert). The volume that aims to partially fill this noticeable gap is a selection of studies, lectures, conference contributions, and a rich body of journalistic work from the last twenty years. The core of the book consists of speeches addressing current issues in today's literature, literary science, or historiography, while many of them also turn to fundamental cultural questions of the present. The first and most extensive part of the book presents studies and lectures and covers almost all areas of Brabec's professional interest. In addition to works generally addressing issues of literary history (e.g., Models of Critical Reflection on Modern Czech Literature), it particularly includes a significant collection of Masaryk studies.
