Description
Praying mantises are predatory insects. There are over 2,500 species in the world. They are mainly found in tropical areas and inhabit various biotopes - forests, shrubby and grassy areas, and even deserts. Most of them do not actively seek food; they wait suspended for the approach of prey, which they quickly seize with their front spiny legs. This implies that they rely primarily on sight, meaning they have very good vision. The shape and color of mantises are highly variable depending on their environment; for example, the crown mantis resembles an orchid flower, the Malaysian mantis looks like a dried leaf, and the African Heterochaeta orientalis resembles a twig.
