Description

European Union citizenship was established less than thirty years ago, in 1993, with the entry into force of the Maastricht Treaty. Even then, EU citizenship was understood as an institution advancing European integration, which until then had been predominantly of an economic nature, towards a political union. Since its inception, EU citizenship has continued to evolve. Although it still has only a derived and supplementary nature in relation to the citizenship of member states, it brings a number of rights to the citizens of member states and is perceived as one of the significant federal elements of the European Union. The book addresses the issue of EU citizenship in a relatively comprehensive manner. It contains chapters on the historical development of this institution, its characteristic features, and a comparison with state citizenship. The focus of the publication is on the content of EU citizenship, i.e., the rights and obligations of EU citizens, with particular attention given to the right of movement and residence of EU citizens, the right not to be discriminated against based on nationality, and the political rights of EU citizens. The book also takes into account current issues regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit on Union citizenship.
