Description
The status of minorities is one of the most complex social and political issues, with key aspects including the prohibition of discrimination and the possibility of using one's own language in public communication, particularly the issue of education. For minorities whose language differs from that of the majority, essentially for most national minorities, education in the mother tongue is a fundamental element. This book addresses the specific issue of minorities, namely the question of higher education in minority languages. Education in minority languages at primary, and often secondary, school levels is relatively common in Europe, while instruction in minority languages at the highest – i.e., university – level of education is rather exceptional, even in states that grant extensive rights to minorities. The book was created in collaboration with the Faculty of Law at Charles University (especially the Institute of Legal History) and the Faculty of Education at J. Selye University in Komárno. Its authors are primarily lawyers and historians, and attention is thus paid to themes of both the past and the present. The publication aims to contribute to further discussions on national and minority issues, intended not only for experts but also for the general public.
