The Nazi crimes committed during World War II were unprecedented in world history up to that point. The response of the Czechoslovak government in exile was the preparation of the so-called Great Retribution Decree, which established extraordinary people's courts in the liberated territory. Individual crimes were then adjudicated by five-member senates composed of a professional judge and four lay judges. In total, these 24 extraordinary people's courts had to deal with 132,549 cases in the first phase, of which public prosecutors filed 38,316 indictments, based on which 713 individuals were sentenced to death, 741 to life imprisonment, and 19,888 to temporary imprisonment. After February 1948, the issue of retribution was reopened, as the government action program of the newly established cabinet on March 10, 1948, deemed the retribution carried out to be insufficient, and a revision was proposed, which took place until the end of 1948.
