The treatise Truth and Method (1960) ranks alongside Heidegger's Being and Time (1927) as one of the key works of 20th-century German philosophy and as one of the few groundbreaking contributions to the question of the nature of the humanities in general. The "method" in the title of the book suggests that the work was born as a product of the 1950s and 1960s. The post-war fascination with technology and the belief in the evident progress of technology were reflected in neo-positivist theories of science and their conviction about the continuous and upward development of scientific theories. Efforts to place scientific theories within a broader cultural framework (Th. Kuhn) as well as claims of absolute anarchy in the field of the logic of scientific theories (P. Feyerabend) were yet to come. Gadamer's own discourse on method thus grew from a completely different tradition. It lends a broader meaning to Heidegger's idea of philosophical hermeneutics, as it deepens his reflections on the being of "hermeneutic experience," on the being of history, and on living being in tradition, while also transferring a purely philological interpretation of tradition into the open realm of philosophical thought.
