Description
A systematic portrayal of Anglo-Saxon literature from the earliest written records to the last poems of the late 11th century. - This epoch is characterized by a movement from pre-Christian, tribal, and all-Germanic origins, which found expression almost exclusively in oral tradition, to the Christian English state with a solid administrative and ecclesiastical structure, within which the most extensive and genre-diverse literature of early medieval Europe emerged. Several dozen poetic and prose works presented here vividly reflect this direction, the clash, and the mutual intertwining of pagan and Christian elements – the formal and thematic features of Germanic oral tradition intertwine with themes, aesthetic principles, and rhetorical techniques of Latin literature. The anthology includes all significant works and genres of that time.
