Celiac disease is not a rare condition. It is estimated that in the Czech Republic, various forms of it affect 40,000 to 50,000 people, most of whom are unaware of their condition. Discussions are therefore ongoing in the Czech Republic regarding targeted screening (i.e., searching for asymptomatic patients) and proper diagnosis to prevent complications from undiagnosed celiac disease. Such complications include, for example, bone thinning, anemia, infertility, or increased susceptibility to cancer.
