Description
This book by historian and journalist Martin Kovář examines one of the most dramatic events of the modern era, the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union, from several unexpected perspectives. Its first part outlines the island state’s relationship with continental Europe from the accession of the Tudor dynasty through the period when Great Britain became the world’s foremost power at the end of the 19th century. The second part covers British-European relations during the turbulent 20th century, while the third focuses on the highly topical story of Brexit. The book’s contents are in Czech. Each of the seven chapters includes a historical “stopping point” presenting a characteristic story from the relevant period, along with a section titled “The Era and Its Protagonists”, offering concise portraits of people who significantly influenced that stage of history, positively or negatively. Each chapter ends with a brief summary and notes referring to sources and literature. The book concludes with a list of sources and a clear index of names.
