This walk through modern Spanish history offers the reader a captivating story of a significant European royal dynasty that, despite all its efforts, never officially ascended to the throne. Nevertheless, its supporters and followers, known as Carlists, have marked modern Spanish history in an unmistakable way. Their project of a 'return to the old golden times' clashes with the visions of Spanish liberals and advocates of modern capitalism in several notably bloody and destructive civil wars, as well as in countless smaller, violent, and political conflicts. However, the Carlist wars transcended the geopolitical boundaries of the Iberian Peninsula in many ways, with hundreds and thousands of fighters from all corners of Europe on both sides, while the Carlists, in turn, assisted various defenders of the 'old order' across the continent. Even though many buried it after the debacle in the Third War (1876), Carlism did not leave the history of Spain and Europe even in the 20th century.
