Description
"The Beast's Vault," which opens this anthology, is the very first short story written by van Vogt. An alien creature capable of changing its molecular structure, a genius mathematician named Jim Brender, and a scientific puzzle that could change the fate of the entire universe - these are the basic ingredients that van Vogt also employs in his other stories. Most of the short stories also served as the basis for later novels, some like "Cat" or "The Process" influenced many other authors with their originality. In contrast, the novella "Substitute Intelligence" is clearly inspired by Philip K. Dick.
