Description
Rashomon Gate is the chronologically second book in the Akitada Sugawara series. I. J. Parker continues the tradition of Judge Dee stories by Robert van Gulik and takes us to 11th century Japan, where the sharp-witted detective Akitada solves cases filled with mysterious murders, blackmail, and corruption at the highest levels. A young nobleman, who works as an official at the Ministry of Justice, is visited by his former professor from the Imperial University, who mistakenly received a blackmail letter intended for someone else, and asks for his help. Akitada welcomes the break from the dull daily grind at the ministry and plunges into the university world full of conflicts, slander, and intrigue. At the university, he is approached by a young lord Minamoto, whose grandfather, Prince Joakira, has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The young lord does not believe the story of a miraculous ascension to heaven and asks Akitada to investigate the case. Akitada delves into a dangerous investigation of a conspiracy among high-ranking nobles while simultaneously continuing to seek evidence to save his old teacher's reputation. Time is of the essence.
