Description
The author has done an admirable job with the historical material and considerable intellectual effort. Her book provides a vivid, coherent, and detailed picture of Hus's life and times. Philosophically cultivated, it addresses themes that represented the dynamic core of contemporary disputes, particularly the clash between realism and nominalism, which formed the backdrop of ideological battles in the 13th and 14th centuries. The main points of the teachings of Hus's inspirer, John Wycliffe, as well as the very essence of Hus's doctrine, are well explained. The characters of both allies and adversaries in Hus's story are portrayed originally and engagingly, albeit largely intuitively, especially the figure of Archbishop Zbyněk Hazmburk, King Václav IV, and Hus's former companion, later arch-enemy Štěpán Pálče.
