Description
This Czech-language collection presents legends about water goblins, water nymphs and other water beings from the rivers, lakes, ponds, streams and pools of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. The authors have selected and retold 85 stories, some of which have never before appeared in print, while most come from now rarely available collections of legends, regional history anthologies and other archival sources. Their aim is to preserve the atmosphere and meaning of the original tales, supplementing them with secondary motifs and digressions that do not alter their basic content but develop it in the spirit of the originals. Unrestrained fantasy has no place in these legends: they follow fairly strict rules, and the conduct of both people and mythical beings has its own logic, which a good storyteller respects, along with the settings and periods in which the stories take place.
