Pope Pius XI (1922–1939) and his successor Pius XII (1939–1958) are often suspected of remaining silent about Nazi crimes and the destruction of millions of European Jews. The secretive Vatican has only recently opened its archives to the public, allowing for gaps in research to be filled and previously hidden secrets to be revealed. The authors of this book are the first non-Catholic historians permitted to explore the dusty archives of the Vatican regarding the relationship between the Catholic Church and the National Socialism of Hitler's Germany. Only now are we discovering the extent to which the Vatican's attempt at a religious-political conception of power and the Catholic Church's strong anti-Bolshevism influenced diplomatic negotiations at the highest levels at that time. Thanks to the sources processed in this book, it has been possible for the first time to clearly and distinctly describe the duplicity, ambiguity, and hypocrisy with which the Catholic Church sought to come to terms with Nazism.
