Description
The collection of five extensive studies by renowned experts presents various approaches to the work of Johann Wolfgang Goethe in contemporary literary science, in both Czech and German. Starting with the theme of Goethe and Europe (Paul Michael Lützeler), the scope expands through the relationship between image and text in the novel Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship (Wilhelm Voßkamp) and a comparative interpretation of three fundamental works by Goethe (The King of Spirits, The Ur-Faust, Elective Affinities, Henriette Herwig) to the understanding of Goethe's personality by Richard Wagner and Thomas Mann (Dieter Borchmeyer). The final study is dedicated to the reception of Goethe by Johannes Urzidil (Gerhard Trapp).
