The work of Doc. PhDr. Josef Beneš, CSc., German Surnames among Czechs, a founding figure in Czech onomastics, emerged from his lifelong interest in the "interaction and confrontation" between Czech and German, which he knew well as a native of the bilingual Prachatice. During the author's lifetime, the work could not be published in book form for political reasons, and recommendations from leading linguists did not help. The work was first published thanks to the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem in 1998, where Doc. Beneš lectured at the Faculty of Education in the 1960s, as a scientific edition with an extensive apparatus and rich indexes compiled by PhDr. Marie Nováková. This edition became the basis for the current publication, which addresses a broader audience interested in the issue of Czech surnames. Among Beneš's other works, we mention the monograph On Czech Surnames (1962), which became the foundation for the book Our Surnames (1983), prepared by Doc. Beneš's daughter – Prof. Dobravou Moldanová. Its second expanded edition (2010) was published by Ag. Pankrác (subsequently reprinted in 2015, 2019).
