Description

The work of Jan Županič and Michal Fiala is the first comprehensive study addressing the issue of Jewish nobility in Central Europe: that is, individuals of Jewish faith who, from the late 18th to the early 20th century, obtained a noble title either in the Habsburg monarchy or in some Central European country. The book is divided into two closely related parts. The first part (by Jan Županič) captures the common and distinct features of noble communities in individual Central European states, their noble policies, the possibilities for social advancement of Jews, and the attitudes of local elites towards them. The second part (by Michal Fiala) contains transcripts of 280 nobility and coat of arms documents issued for Jewish nobles in the western part of the Habsburg monarchy (in the Czech-Austrian hereditary lands and later in the Cisleithania), supplemented with drawings of the granted coats of arms.
