Description
The book examines the political and economic interests of Great Britain and Germany in China between 1894 and 1914. In the end, they placed their hopes in supporting the former imperial general Yuan Shikai, believing that he would guarantee the assumption of the imperial regime’s financial obligations. In the Far East, the outbreak of the First World War was not as decisive a turning point as it was in Europe, but it brought a major change in the balance of power. Germany’s position was eliminated within a short time, while Great Britain, France and Russia were fully occupied by the war in Europe, and Japan quickly took advantage of the situation to expand its position in China.
