Description
This Czech-language double novel unfolds across several narrative strands centered on Franěk Podhajský, an aging lawyer who was once a prosecutor and state attorney and is now a private advocate. The other central figure is his father Polda, a defiant idealist imprisoned by both fascists and communists, who died many years ago. Franěk holds late conversations with him from beyond the grave, discussing what they should have discussed but never did during Polda’s lifetime. In the strand set in the present, the mysterious, attractive and eccentric Saša enters Franěk’s life, emerging from the depths of the communist and fascist past, while the political problems into which she draws him are thoroughly contemporary. Set against a dramatic story spanning almost a century of Czech history, the novel also contains criminal intrigue.
