Description
This Czech-language generational novel, woven from numerous stories inspired by real events, covers the second half of the twentieth century through the beginning of the twenty-first, as illusions about a new world turn into reality. As evening becomes night, doctor Marian Brody writes his will in an empty house. He is waiting for Šedivec, his future murderer and also his best friend. Why must they face one another in a fatal confrontation? Is it some buried misunderstanding, or does it involve Brody’s prosperous private clinic, Šedivec’s sister or his mad mother? Could it be an unforgiven grievance from long ago, connected with memories of the girls who taught them about love or sex? As tramps, they insisted on their freedom until it once brought them before a court. Is there a mysterious reason hidden in that episode? Together they have lived through years of weary totalitarian rule, the Velvet Revolution, the chaos of privatisation and the harshness of democracy, and now, it seems, they are at the end.
