Description
One of the oldest names for Easter is the Latin word pascha. It originates from the Aramaic and Greek term for Easter, derived from the Hebrew pesach. In the Anglo-Saxon and Germanic world, Easter is referred to as Eastern and Ostern. These names may have originated from the spring goddess Ostara (Eostre) or from a distortion of the Middle High German Urständ (resurrection) or Osten (east). The Slavic term for Easter (e.g., Polish Wielkanoc, Slovak Veľká noc) refers to the Great Night, the celebration of Christ's miraculous resurrection. The first and most important day of Easter is Easter Sunday (the Feast of the Resurrection of the Lord). Easter Sunday is the first day of the Easter season, which lasts for 50 days and is the most joyful period of the Christian year. Valburga Vavřinová builds on her successful factual encyclopedia, the Alphabet of Christmas, and wants us to reflect on Easter, not just enjoy the Easter whip.
